Rose Huey & Rose S.

Rose Huey (she/they) is a dancer, maker, arts administrator, movement educator and proud dog parent. She is a hapa kid living on occupied Ohlone Chochenyo land aka Oakland, CA. Currently, Rose co-directs the Elders Project, creating intergenerational performances with the Destiny Arts Center Youth Performance Company. Rose is a BANDALOOP core dancer and also serves as BANDALOOP’s Education Manager. She enjoys teaching movement on the ground and in the air. Rose has big feelings and a brain that never stops whirring. She likes to be in high places where there’s wind, big sky, and vastness. She runs on coffee, peanut butter, sunshine, and audiobooks. Rose continues to investigate what it means to be a dancer, how to dance, and the complexities of living in a body.

Rose S. has been an artist and a writer all her life. Originally from the Midwest, Rose has spent many decades living in San Francisco. Rose was best known for her watercolors of dream creatures - especially for her Dream Birds. Lots of her art and writing has been found in dreams. Rose started journaling at a young age and continues to engage in a dedicated dream journaling practice. To date, Rose has written over 65,000 pages of dream notes. She has spent time as a bookkeeper, bodyworker, healer, watercolorist, and teacher. Rose currently displays her art on the online gallery site Renderosity under the name Dragongirl (when she was a little girl Rose could see Dragons. Sometimes she can still see them). Rose enjoys reading science fiction and likes to start her days with a sweet treat and a strong cup of coffee.

Gift: Shopping List for Rose

Rose starts every day with a strong cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Her favorite treat is pie, especially cherry, mincemeat or pecan pie. We both find pleasure in food and talk a lot about our favorite meals, how we prepare dishes (we both like to make pesto and Rose always adds extra garlic), and what we are craving in the moment. Rose made it abundantly clear that the greatest gift was the series of phone calls. However, we decided to include some morning treats as an additional part of the gift, which evolved into a whole shopping list. Covid has impacted Rose’s access to the store even more than before, especially since others do the shopping for her. She has been unimpressed by the quality or pies/baked goods purchased from Trader Joes and Whole foods and has found she can’t get all the things on her list through grocery delivery. Due to Covid precautions and logistics, we were unable to film the grocery delivery. So here’s the shopping list and email response.

Hi Rose,

This is going to sound silly, but I can’t tell you how excited I was when I saw those long rolls. And the two pies!  And all that Pepsi! Oh boy! I had the chicken for dinner yesterday, and tortillas and that wonderful cheese for dinner today. It’s been incredible.  At every meal for the past two days I have had something I really like!  It’s been a very long time it seems since that has been true. It just makes daily life SO much nicer. I can’t thank you enough, or even begin to express how much all you did to make it happen means to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you - and your sister too!!
