THE NUEVA SCHOOL POSTERS

In support of AAPI communities and to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, high school students from Jamie Chiahui Gao’s advanced Mandarin class at The Nueva School worked on a project called “Searching Root: My American History”(《寻根:我的美国历史》). This project aims to know our ancestry, ourselves, and our futures. The enduring aim is to have a deeper understanding of the role each of us has played in American history, but also to reflect on and face current problems in American society. After recognizing our ancestors’ and other’s contributions to American history, we will do our best to defend racial equality. During the research, students interviewed their elders and documented their life stories via audio and video. At the end of the semester, students had an in-class film festival to share their family’s American stories. For The Great AAPI Elder Print Off, students recall dialogues with their elders and create images that represent their wisdom, advice, and appearance.

Jamie Chiahui Gao is a High School Mandarin teacher in The Nueva School in San Mateo, California. She grew up in Taiwan and immigrated to the USA twenty years ago. Read: Jamie’s Open Letter To Student In Response to the Racial Hate Crime
